Som ett påskris

It looks like just a few thin twigs, my judas tree, Cersis siliquastrum.
But it is appropriate for it to bloom today, on Good Friday, while the tv is showing Jesus Christ Superstar.

I have got two plants of this species. The thinner and taller one is an air layer of the first one. The first one has never had any flowers. It is probably not very suitable for these trees to live the sort of life it has to live in my home: indoors a long time of year, probably too dark, then outdoors in the summer, probably too cold then. Overwintering in the garage.

This is a picture often used to sell seeds of Cersis siliquastrum! But it is a tree of a totally different species, an azalea, which should be obvious to most people. (But naturally not to enthusiastic beginner-bonsaiists!)

Development?

Ficus with big trunk! Much bigger than any of my other ficuses, which are all made from cuttings. (This one I bought in this size.) The branches are not very much to brag about, but at least I'm pleased the tree is developing in a good direction. Below is an old picture:

I wrote about it in february 2011.

My judas tree is NOT developing in a very good direction! Some branches have died in the winter, this is how it looks today!

And a picture from behind the house: My outdoor trees are still (half) under the snow...

Close to the house the snow has melted away and I have found the first tussilago (coltsfoot)!

May

May means (for me) taking trees out of the house! I put them on both sides of the house, trying to protect them from most of the wind. The leaves that have developed inside are really weak and soft and can tolerate nothing... Here are my zelkovas, elms, ginkgo and two small cotoneasters. Picture below: maples, growing wild to "gain weight"!

The flowers on my judas tree have developed into seeds! Can they really be fertile seeds? I mean the tree has been "single" - there is no father-tree involved, but maybe it can polllinate itself?
The only way to find out is to sow the seeds!

My outdoor-trees are still in the ground - haven't had time to start with them.

I took this picture to show how fast the spring changes into summer around here: the birch-tree is green before the snow has melted away!

Today: The grass and the birch-trees are green, and the aspen tree will be soon...

Cersis - flowers!

This time of year I am occupied with repotting all my indoor trees and garage-trees. I had a nice surprice when I suddenly found flowers on my judas tree! It is the first time. The plant is a few years old, a layering from my first judastree.

The mother-plant, below, is a little bit thicker (a few years older) but with no flowers.

Projekt omplantering

Finally I have started repotting my trees.

I have also cut the branches on my cercis. It divides in two equally thick branches a bit up on he trunk, and I know I have to  choose one and take the other one away. Have not decided which one to choose.

One thing that has annoyed me for a long time is the nebari of my little ficus natasja. This is the front. Ugly.

The back looks much better! Can I turn the tree around? Yes...

Baksidan ser mycket bättre ut!  Kan jag vända på trädet? Ja...

Instead of this...

Så i stället för så här...

...it now looks like this. Yes I know there is a big round hole in the front. My hope is this will be easier to do something about than the roots. Maybe I can turn the tree a little more to one side or the other.

Here is my turkish pine, also repotted a few days ago. Species unknown. Above it a picture where you can see in the background some of the pines I took the seeds from! -The beautiful rounded trees. The needles are long thin soft and a little twisted, hanging down - except for the newest needles - they are really short and pretty! Anybody can give me a guess of the species?

This year's first meeting with the local bonsai club. (We were supposed to meet last month, but cancelled that meeting because of the cold weather.) I worked with some of my zelkovas. As you can see the leaves are coming out and I have to repot it!
Koncentration!

A cutting that I got from a bonsai-friend and brought home from the meeting: it is a ficus nerifolia. I have heard that it is very difficult to grow from cuttings, but we will see. I have had luck with many different species before!

I had some questions about my judas tree (cercis siliquastrum) so I took a picture to show you what it looks like. I have read that it is possible to grow in the garden in the south of Sweden, but I keep my tree in the garage in the winter, outside in the summer and indoors (in the house) in the spring. This one is also waiting to be repotted.
